FULL NAME: Aristotle Siwoo Ahn
NICKNAMES: Goes by Aris. But Aristotle is fine too! Just talk to him!
AGE/DOB: Seventeen | August 19th |
LeoYEAR: Junior
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Male (He/Him/His)
SEXUALITY: A good-time-boy that's happy to play and kiss and fool around with girls and boys alike but avoids commitment like the plague. He appreciates the
idea of a relationship and has caught feelings for a classmate more than once, but the reality of getting involved in something like that is too much for him. After all, what happens when they leave??
HOMETOWN: Elflock Falls, West Virginia. (Currently) Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania. (Formerly)
APPEARANCE:Aris is a slim, wiry young man that's built up enough muscle through athletics and general activity that he can no longer be knocked over by a stiff breeze and stands at a perfectly reasonable five feet and ten inches tall. He's got a pleasant face with dark eyes, a button nose, and full lips that break all too readily into a broad smile that's one of his most constant and defining features. While his short brown hair is cut into a style that should be simple to maintain, he tends to have a bit of a cowlick and it can stick up in the back if he's not paying attention to it.
He doesn't have much interest in fashion and, if left to his own devices, would likely wear nothing but casual t-shirts or hoodies paired with jeans or track pants. Since his grandma buys most of his clothes, however, there's also a healthy number of button-up shirts, polos, and khakis in the rotation. When he thinks he might see her or his grandpa in town, he might even put on a tie so they can tell him how
dapper he looks! He always wears sneakers, though. You never know when you might need to run or dance or
something.
Aristotle is a relentlessly upbeat guy with too much charisma and too little sense. He has a vibrant personality that can rub off on others and it's rare to see him without a smile on his face or a bounce in his step. This sunny disposition can survive almost anything, from failure to loss to punishment, because he figures the world will just keep on spinning won't it? So what's the point in getting down about the small stuff? This resilient optimism prompts him to look for the good in most situations and most people, even if that means overlooking the bad, and can make him come across as a cheerful, oblivious airhead.
This chipper disposition, however, may be more learned than innate. Aris is a desperate attention-seeker that craves validation from others and always wants to put his best, most likable self out into the world. So even when he's having an off day, when he's disappointed or hurt or unhappy, he always tries to keep up the smile and act like nothing's wrong. The last thing he wants to do is burden other people with his problems or chase them away by being too messy or needy or just
no fun. While there are close friends that he may open up to on occasion, they are few and far between and he's clearly uneasy about the prospect of being fully
known by anyone. It certainly hasn't inspired his mind-reading mother to stick around.
One thing that is entirely genuine about Aris, though, is his energy. He's an excitable, animated person that always wants to be doing something and has a difficult time sitting still. This can be equal parts endearing and exhausting for people that spend a lot of time with him, much like adapting to life with an over-eager puppy. He's playful and affectionate with friends, prone to roughhousing and goofing off, and doesn't seem to have an off button. This has only gotten worse since he came to Peckenpaugh because he started playing sports and he's now an Energizer Bunny that's in good shape and has stamina for days. He's impulsive and his attention span is short, so directing his enthusiasm can be an uphill battle. He just wants to have fun right now and worry about everything else later. Why's that a bad thing?
Motivated by being noticed, Aris thrives when he can be the center of attention and puts much of his energy into standing out or getting people to focus on him. This is true both in the interests he pursues (like cheerleading and music and voice acting) and in the way he interacts with others. If he can do something to earn a glance or a smile from a classmate, he'll do it, whether that's making jokes in class or accepting a challenge or diving headlong into the class scheme of the day (whether it was serious or not). He tends to act first and think later and so can get himself into trouble while chasing the approval of others. Though his grandparents have been trying to break him of these habits for the last few years and he does
sometimes pause to worry what grammy and gramps might say if something blows up in his face, that doesn't happen as often as it ought to. Sorry, grammy.
Unfortunately, Aris focuses so much of his attention on his emotions and his relationships with others, there doesn't seem to be much room in his brain for anything else. While he's certainly not stupid, he can be incredibly scatterbrained and short-sighted. He's irresponsible, prone to forget about the
unimportant things like homework and where he left his wand and setting his alarm clock. It's not uncommon for him to be late, show up unprepared, or scrape by with the bare minimum because that's all he had time to get done. This isn't intentional, but with his impulsive nature and tendency to live only in the present, it's sort of inevitable. He's pointedly unmotivated, lacking the competitive edge to care about winning and the direction to have any real goals for the future.
FUN FACTS:✨ Aristotle tends to talk with his hands, often gesturing wildly to emphasize what he's saying and fully express himself. Passersby should beware and try not to get hit in the face.
✨ He dislikes going to sleep at night and, even when he's tired, will fight to stay awake like a little kid refusing to go down for a nap. He's not tired, you're tired! Because of his, he tends to have poor sleep habits and often wakes up later than he should.
✨ While Aris has adapted to the country life, he's still a city boy in some respects. He has no survival skills, could easily get lost in the woods, and is generally squeamish about the creepy crawlies that live out in nature. No snakes, please. No spiders, please. No buggies, please. He needs his roommates to handle that sort of stuff.
✨ He plays the drums in a band with
Uriah Hatfield.
✨
He thinks sparkle text is RAD. Don't encourage him.
LANGUAGES: English. Just English.
HOBBIES: Attention-seeking. Goofing off. Roughhousing. Playing sports. Quodpot. Cheerleading. Dancing. Choreographing. Showing off. Tagging along. Talking (about anything to anyone). Taking pictures. Taking selfies. Procrastinating. Listening to music. Playing piano. Playing drums. Rhythm games. Staying up late. Dueling. Fancy wandwork.
SKILLS:DUELIST| The son of a professional dueller, Aris had the advantage of his mother's insights and the motivation to impress her, both of which aided him in honing his skills from an early age. He's not a powerful spell-caster, but he is clever, adaptable, quick on the draw, and a surprisingly difficult opponent with a wide breadth of knowledge.
ENERGIZER ATHLETE| When it comes to sports, Aris is a
jack of all trades, master of none type with stamina to spare. He's athletic and energetic and can keep going for a
long time, whether he's dancing or tumbling for cheer, playing Quodpot, or just going for a run. For better or worse, he doesn't have an off switch and it takes a lot to wear him down. While he's never the best at what he's doing, he's often the last man standing and encouraging the others to go for another scrimmage or another dance practice.
MUSICIAN| Aris likes being the center of attention and learning to play music proved to be a good way to do that. He started out on the piano as a child, learning from one of his nannies and going on to play in elementary school, but later learned to play the drums to branch out. Plus, drum solos are
super fun, right? While not exceptional, he's a skilled and enthusiastic musician with a strong sense of rhythm.
TALKER| Aris isn't the brightest or the smoothest guy in the world, but when he knows what to say (either because he's been told what to say or because he's actually knowledgeable on a topic for a change) he comes across as charismatic, sincere, and even authoritative. He's got a pleasant voice and an engaging disposition for speaking and people typically like listening to him talk. This all falls apart when he's unscripted or doesn't know his topic, though, and he can't fake it to save his life. He also has a talent for talking quickly and tackling tongue-twisters as well.
RHYTHM GAMER| While Aris isn't a gamer, he's drawn to and excels at games that require quick reflexes and a sense of rhythm. Catch him playing the various
SuperStar games on his phone....pretty much constantly when he has so sit still. It's kind of gross how good he is at this.
FAMILY:CHLOE AHN. Mother. Professional
Dueller. Chloe is an accomplished dueller and famous within certain circles, supporting herself and her son with tournament winnings and wand endorsements. She's ambitious and diligent and wickedly clever but not particularly maternal; she cares for Aris but often puts herself first and leaves him chasing her attention. She's also a naturally gifted legilemens that has been known to read her son's mind when he won't come clean about what's going on with him or the trouble he's gotten into.
RUDE, MOM. It's a complicated relationship.
In the past few years, she has dominated the tournament circuit in Europe and Asia, leaving her son to stay with her parents in Elflock Falls while she travels the world.
DEMETRIA & LINUS AHN. Grandmother & Grandfather. Owl Trainers. Demetria and Linus are more grounded and more family-oriented than their daughter Chloe and have taken an active role in Aris' life since he came to live with them. While their rules and expectations can feel smothering to him, it also feels much more like a home than his previous situation and he's become very close to them in a relatively short period of time. Please be proud of him grammy and gramps.
Demetria is warm and patient but stern and a homemaker extraordinaire, while Linus is jovial and affectionate and full of advice (whether he's asked for it or not). They both work as owl trainers for the Owl Post.
ESTRANGED FATHER| Who knows? Who cares?
Aris does a little. Sometimes. But they don't talk about it. BACKGROUND:Chloe Ahn left her humble home in Elflock Falls as soon as she finished high school, determined to do something more with her life than training owls with her family. Initially attending an Auror academy, where her dueling talents and natural legilimency allowed her to thrive, she ultimately found the training stifling and rigid and unfulfilling. So she abandoned it to pursue another (more glamorous) dream instead: professional dueling. By the time she was twenty-four, her career was taking off and she was dazzling audiences with her daring spell-work, cleverness, and nerves. Even if she wasn't winning every match, she never failed to put on a show and she was soon earning enough money to support herself.
By the time Aristotle came along five years later, the product of a short-lived relationship with a former Auror associate, Chloe was no longer just getting by but had become a prominent name in the sport and was living comfortably in a Pittsburgh high rise. While she hadn't
intended to have children, at least not for a while, she nevertheless had her son and spent the first few years of his life as a proud mother that reveled in raising him, teaching him things, and showing him off to everyone. The two were quite close. As Aris got older, though, his mother's focused returned to her career and her absences became more frequent, leaving the happy, precocious tot to be raised more by a rotation of nannies than by his mother.
While Aris was never left without care or attention and he always liked his nannies well enough, this frequent separation from his mother was difficult for him and he became desperate for attention and validation, especially as he started school. He figured out that people noticed when he was outgoing and energetic and funny, so he he did that. He figured out that people noticed when he was daring and bold and broke the rules, so he did that too. Much to the chagrin of his mother and his nannies, he grew up into a pleasant and cheerfully rebellious kid that was well-liked by students and teachers alike but constantly getting into trouble for playing the class clown, seeing through any questionable idea that came into his friends' heads, and acting out just to be noticed. He never got into any serious trouble and he never got into fights, but he was always in detention and every time the office contacted his out-of-state mother it felt like both a punishment and a reward. At least he got to say hi, right? And at least she was thinking about him?
Despite all of this, Aris maintained a close but peculiar relationship with his mother, even as he got older and she spent more and more time away. When she was home, they would spend a lot of time together. They would go out to eat and go to movies. She would spend time tutoring him in his lessons and teaching him dueling techniques. They would talk and she would attempt to catch up on what she'd missed in his life, sometimes using her legilimency to fill in the gaps when he wouldn't come clean about friends or grades or actions that had gotten him into trouble. This was a source of friction between the two, but ultimately one that he came to accept and which always came down to her putting the blame on him.
If you would just talk to me, Aristotle, I wouldn't have to. This chaotic routine continued until Aristotle was twelve and his mother was invited to attend a series of tournaments overseas. This was the next step forward in her career and one that Chloe decided she couldn't pass up, even if it would take her away from home almost constantly for the next year. Deciding that this was far too long to leave her son in the care of hired help, she reluctantly reached out to her parents in Elflock Falls to ask about sending Aris to stay with them. This was a shock for everyone involved, as Aris had only met his grandparents a handful times in his life and they were nearly strangers to him, but Demetria and Linus soon agreed to take the boy in.
Nothing about the change was easy for Aris. After spending his whole life in a city surrounded by Muggles and their technology, Elflock Falls felt tiny, strangely magical, and like a rural backwater. Where his nannies and his mother had always been accommodating and accustomed to his antics, his grandparents were more strict and had opinions about everything he did...though they always reassured him that it was because they loved him. For the first few months this felt smothering but the longer he stayed, the more accustomed he became to the rules and the routines and the steadfast ways of his grandparents. It was somehow reassuring and soon came to feel more like a home to him, though he continued to miss his mother and he continued struggle to meet their standards.
For two years, Aris attended the local school in Elflock Falls before starting his freshman year at Peckenpaugh. By now, he's come to see himself as a local and he's always eager to welcome his friends back every school year.
WAND: Red Oak Wand,
Wampus Cat Whiskers Core, 9", Springy
FAMILIAR: Plato -- a cat that
honks and looks like a long-legged goblin. Like his owner, he's very affectionate and very needy. Every night, he sleeps in bed with Aris, tucked under the covers with his head poking out; it's a very cozy image.
CAREER GOALS: Aris has no idea what he wants to do with his life. If asked, he'll make a joke but have a silent existential crisis. Maybe someone will tell him what to do??
PART-TIME JOB: Cashier at Dispel & That. Aris' grandparents thought a job would be a good way for him to learn some responsibility. He's a decent employee but he's often late and tends to treat his job like a social outing, cheerfully chatting up customers and goofing around with co-workers. But, hey, the work still gets done!
CLASSES:CHARMS| While not that academically motivated, Aris enjoys the dramatic flair of magic words and waving a wand, especially after growing up with a duelist for a mother. He works hard in Charms and does fairly well. He may not always get the spell just right but nobody can outshine his enthusiasm and nothing will stop him from volunteering for a demonstration.
TRANSFIGURATION| Transfiguration can be fun but it doesn't hold the same allure that Charms does. Aris tries in this class, but not that hard and the results tend to be in the ballpark of right but always...a bit off. He rarely keeps up with the amount of homework that's assigned and hopes that charisma will get him a pass with Ms. Min (it doesn't).
MUSIC| Aris took to music at a young age, both because he possessed some natural ability and because he liked the way that it made everyone stop and pay attention to him. While he's not one of the most gifted in the class, he is one of the happiest to be there! He plays the piano in concert band but can also play the drums.
DADA| Aris has a (small) advantage in Defense Against the Dark Arts, having grown up with a mother that's an expert on the subject. She taught him a lot and he's more motivated in this class than in any other because there's a part of him that thinks it will earn him a pat on the back. Someday. His essays tend to be full of rambling filler but his performance is nonetheless impressive.
OCCLUMENCY| As with Defense Against the Dark Arts, Aris took Occlumency to try to feel closer to his mother. She's a natural legilimens, so he'll probably take to legilimency too, right? If nothing else, it would be nice to be able to keep her from reading his mind sometimes. That's invasive, MOM. He tries hard and has some natural talent (which is probably why he was allowed in the class in the first place) but his emotions tend to cloud his outcomes.
EXTRA-CURRICULARS:AV CLUB| Aris has about as much technical know-how as his cat, but he's got natural charm that serves him well when it comes to dictation. He's in AV Club to participate in radio dramas and storytelling, but can also be roped into reading factual pieces for the shyer among them. Don't let him touch the knobs and dials; he will definitely break something.
DUELLING CLUB| While Aris lacks the competitive spirit that some of his peers in Duelling and Wandwork might possess, he's nevertheless enthusiastic, creative, and quick on the draw. He's a better dueller than he has any right to be, frankly, and clearly wants to impress everyone. Mr. Purcell and Presley will tell his mom how good he's doing too, right??
PRINT & YEARBOOK| While Aris doesn't contribute much to Print Club in terms of skill, he's nevertheless happy to be involved in the process! He likes bouncing from social group to social group to take pictures and do polls and otherwise handle the menial tasks the other members might not have time to bother with. He's the member of the club that gets sent on a coffee and snack run when a deadline is looming and everyone else is working. His writing is...pretty bad and nobody tries to get him to get handle columns anymore.
CHEERLEADING| Aris joined Cheerleading (as a freshman) because of a crush but stayed around after realizing that dancing, chanting, acrobatics, and tossing girls in air is all super fun! His bubbly personality and energetic nature are a perfect fit for this particular sport and he's a strong member of the squad.
JV QUODPOT| Kestrel. Aris also joined Quodpot (as a sophomore) because of a crush and stayed around after realizing that flying, playing hot potato with a near-exploding Quod, and the camaraderie of being on a team is also super fun! He's not the strongest player on the team, but he's optimistic, never gives up, and can be surprisingly clever when push comes to shove.
CONCERT BAND| Piano/Percussion. Sometimes Aris wonders if he should've focused on an instrument with more solos but he's got a strong sense of rhythm and does well in percussion. So it all worked out in the end! He's just happy to be here.
SORTING?: The sorting experience was confusing for Aris. He found all of the questions to be either difficult to answer or difficult to understand and he worried by the end that they'd just tell him he needed to find another school to go to. In the end, he hastily chose to go with Deeplurk because the question had seemed sort of like a joke.
Would you rather have more eyes or more hearts? ... Hahaha?
These days, he figures that he ended up in the right place, though. No point in worrying about it!
